Brazil’s Souto Correa Cesa Lummertz & Amaral Advogados has hired a former Trench Rossi Watanabe partner to boost its M&A practice in São Paulo.
Karina Klabinska Yunan Kyriakos Saad, 45, joined Souto Correa on 3 September, taking the 95-lawyer firm’s partner count to 16. She left Trench Rossi in December.
Saad now works in a 25-lawyer M&A team led by Luis Felipe Spinelli. He says the firm is looking forward to adding further strength to the team in São Paulo where “we have been experiencing significant increase in demand.” Spinelli adds that “Karina’s 20 years of experience will contribute to the team’s development and bring about more efficiency to the firm’s services.”
Born in 2013 after a group of partners split from Veirano Advogados in Porto Alegre, Souto Correa quickly expanded. The firm opened its Brasília office in 2013 and its São Paulo office in 2014. It inaugurated its Rio de Janeiro base in 2016.
Spinelli says the firm is trying to consolidate its practice, focusing on M&As involving national and international companies.
Recently, Souto Correa acted for companies during Brazil’s lorry driver strikes, obtaining an injunction to prevent strikers blocking the entrance to the port of Santos. The firm is particularly active in the electricity sector. In December the team helped a Mexican steel company obtain an injunction against Brazil’s government and its electricity regulator ANEEL.
Trench Rossi said in a statement that the firm “had the privilege of counting on Karina Yunan’s dedication, friendship and professionalism for over 20 years until January of this year.” Trench Rossi’s M&A team has 13 partners and it is one of the most prestigious firms in the market.
